Iran's Missile Attack on Israel Triggers Retaliation Threats Amid Rising Regional Tensions

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to retaliate against Iran following a missile attack on Israel. He declared, "Iran made a big mistake tonight and it will pay for it," during a late-night Security Cabinet meeting. Netanyahu described the missile attack as unsuccessful and warned that Iran would soon face consequences similar to those experienced by its adversaries in Gaza and Lebanon.

Iran Attacks Israel, Netanyahu Promises Retaliation

Missile Attack and Defence

Iran launched numerous missiles at Israel, causing Israelis to seek shelter, while celebrations erupted across Iran. Despite the attack, there were no immediate reports of casualties. Israel reported intercepting many of the missiles, with assistance from US destroyers. Iran's Revolutionary Guard claimed that 90% of their missiles hit their intended targets, focusing on air and radar bases linked to the deaths of senior Hamas and Hezbollah figures.

The Israeli military confirmed no injuries from the Iranian missile attack. Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari stated that Israel's air defences intercepted many missiles, although some landed in central and southern regions. He emphasised that this strike would have repercussions and urged the public to follow army safety guidelines.

International Reactions

US President Joe Biden expressed full support for Israel after thwarting the Iranian missile barrage. He commended both US and Israeli militaries for their efforts and mentioned ongoing discussions about an appropriate response. Biden remarked, "Make no mistake, the United States is fully, fully supportive of Israel." National security adviser Jake Sullivan noted that the attack marked a significant escalation by Iran.

Iranian state television broadcasted footage of missile launches from undisclosed locations within Iran. Celebrations in cities like Arak, Qom, and Tehran followed the attack, with chants of "God is great!" and "Death to America" heard. However, Iran's backing of regional militias has sparked anger amid protests over international sanctions affecting the country.

Regional Tensions

Netanyahu had previously warned Iran, which supports Hezbollah and Hamas, asserting that Israel can reach any location in the Middle East. This statement came days after an airstrike near Beirut killed Hezbollah's leader, backed by Tehran. Hezbollah's acting leader Naim Kassem vowed continued resistance following the assassination of Hassan Nasrallah and other top commanders.

Since October 8, Israel and Hezbollah have exchanged fire across the Lebanon border almost daily. This escalation began after Hamas fighters entered Israel, igniting conflict in Gaza. Meanwhile, concerns persist for approximately 250 people abducted from Israel nearly a year ago as attention shifts towards Lebanon.

The situation remains tense as both sides brace for potential further escalations. The international community watches closely as these developments unfold amidst ongoing regional conflicts and diplomatic challenges.
