Iran Cautions Italy on Bilateral Relations Amid US Demands Over Drone Suspect
Iran has cautioned Italy about potential harm to their diplomatic ties. This warning comes after Italy detained an Iranian engineer, Mohammad Abedini, on a US warrant. The arrest is linked to a drone attack in Jordan last year that killed three American soldiers. Iran's foreign ministry summoned the Italian ambassador, Paola Amadei, to express its concerns.

The situation has become complex for Italy, which maintains good relations with both the US and Iran. Italy had earlier summoned the Iranian ambassador over the detention of Italian journalist Cecilia Sala in Tehran. Sala was arrested shortly after arriving in Iran on December 13, accused of violating local laws.
Diplomatic Tensions and Legal Proceedings
The arrest of Abedini at Milan's Malpensa airport on December 16 has sparked diplomatic tensions. The US Justice Department accuses him of supplying drone technology used in the Jordan attack. Meanwhile, Sala's detention is speculated to be a bargaining tactic by Iran to secure Abedini's release.
Iranian official Majid Nili Ahmadabadi described Abedini's detention as illegal and politically motivated by the US. He urged Italy to release Abedini to prevent damage to bilateral relations. The Milan court of appeals is set to decide on January 15 whether Abedini will remain in prison or be placed under house arrest during extradition proceedings.
Legal and Diplomatic Challenges
Abedini's lawyer, Alfredo De Francesco, visited him in prison and discussed Sala's case. Abedini expressed confusion over any connection between their cases but was moved by her situation. "He asked me if she had been arrested and how she had been arrested," De Francesco said.
The US government has not publicly commented on Abedini's case but has previously expressed concerns about suspects escaping Italian justice before extradition. Milan's general prosecutor opposes granting house arrest for Abedini, citing flight risk concerns despite assurances from Iran's consulate.
International Relations and Historical Context
Italy faces a diplomatic challenge as it balances relations with the US and Iran. Premier Giorgia Meloni's government is still dealing with past embarrassments, such as the escape of Russian businessman Artyom Uss from Italy despite US warnings. Uss later resurfaced in Russia.
Iran traditionally maintains stable relations with Italy compared to other European countries like Britain, France, and Germany. These nations often accuse Iran of supplying missiles to Russia and producing weapon-grade uranium, allegations that Tehran denies.
The upcoming visit of President Joe Biden to Italy might bring up these issues again. The delicate diplomatic situation requires careful handling by all parties involved to avoid further complications.
