Leading Human Rights Lawyer Arrested After Attending Funeral of Teenage Girl in Iran
Authorities detain Nasrin Sotoudeh, a prominent human rights lawyer, for violating Irans headscarf law at the funeral of Armita Geravanad. The incident comes after nationwide protests following the death of Mahsa Amini under similar circumstances.
In a recent development from Iran, Nasrin Sotoudeh, a prominent human rights lawyer was arrested on Sunday. The arrest came after her attendance at the funeral of Armita Geravand, a teenage girl who succumbed to injuries sustained in an unexplained incident on Tehran's Metro. The news of this arrest was reported by Fars news agency, which is known for its close relations with the country’s security forces.

The authorities have charged Sotoudeh with violating Iran's mandatory headscarf or hijab law. This report has been republished by several other Iranian news outlets and it also mentions multiple arrests during Geravand’s funeral. It is worth noting that Geravand herself was not wearing a headscarf when she got injured.
Sotoudeh's Stand
Sotoudeh, 60 years old and well-known for defending activists, opposition politicians and women prosecuted for removing their headscarves in Iran had labeled Geravand’s death as "another state murder". She made this statement on Saturday before attending the funeral held on Sunday morning.
Mysterious Incident Leading to Death
Geravand had been in coma for weeks following her injury in Tehran. Her demise coincided with the one-year anniversary of another similar case where Mahsa Amini, aged 22 died while under custody of Irans morality police due to non-compliance with hijab rules. There are still unclear details about what exactly happened immediately after Geravand boarded the train on October 1st. While one friend claimed that she hit her head on station's platform to Iranian state television; there isn't any video evidence supporting this claim as it gets blocked by a bystander just seconds later when we see her limp body being carried away.
Demand for Independent Investigation
Activists abroad suspect that Geravand may have been pushed or attacked due to her not wearing the hijab. They are demanding an independent investigation by the United Nations fact-finding mission on Iran, citing pressure by the theocracy on victims' families and state TV's history of airing coerced confessions. Adding to this, state media footage showed Geravand’s parents attributing their daughter’s injury to a blood pressure issue, a fall or perhaps both.
Past Arrests and Health Condition
Sotoudeh had previously been arrested in 2018 on charges of collusion and propaganda against Iran's rulers which led to her sentencing of 38 years in prison along with 148 lashes. She was released in 2020 but details about her release conditions were never made public. Sotoudeh also suffers from chronic gastrointestinal and foot problems which has led her to visit clinics occasionally.
In conclusion, this incident highlights the ongoing struggle for women's rights in Iran where mandatory laws like wearing a hijab continue to be enforced strictly. It also brings into focus the need for transparency and accountability within law enforcement agencies as allegations of state violence continue to surface frequently. The international community will be keenly watching how this situation unfolds and what actions are taken by Iranian authorities concerning these arrests.
