Iran Halts Peace Talks With US, Says Israeli Military Operations Have Undermined Ceasefire Efforts

Iran has halted indirect talks with the United States, accusing Israel of breaking ceasefire-related understandings through ongoing military action in Lebanon and Gaza.

Iranian state-aligned outlets say negotiations and mediated message exchanges are paused, as Tehran argues that recent Israeli operations undermine the basis for any ceasefire arrangement.

The pause in diplomatic engagement follows fresh weekend clashes between United States and Iranian forces, despite an earlier ceasefire. These confrontations, alongside Israeli strikes in Lebanon, have fuelled concerns over a broader regional flare-up, even as negotiations over a wider deal were already strained by disputes on Iran's nuclear and missile programmes.

Conditions linked to Lebanon and Gaza

Tasnim news agency, which is close to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, reported that Iran views developments in Lebanon as central to the ceasefire framework. According to Tasnim, Tehran believes the arrangement has been breached “on all fronts” because of Israel's current operations and expanded strikes in Lebanese territory.

Iran has repeatedly stated that any future agreement with Washington must require an end to Israeli military activities in both Gaza and Lebanon. Tehran also insists that Israeli forces withdraw from Lebanese territory as part of such a deal, tying regional fronts together in its conditions for sustained calm.

Strategic waterways and 'Resistance Front’

Tasnim said Tehran and allied organisations within the so-called “Resistance Front” are now weighing stronger pressure tactics against Israel and its supporters. Options under discussion reportedly include a full closure of the Strait of Hormuz and increased activity in other important waterways, signalling potential risks for global shipping routes.

As diplomatic efforts stall, tensions in Lebanon continue to rise. Israeli forces have widened operations against Hezbollah, prompting further exchanges of fire along the border. The UN Security Council is expected to convene an emergency meeting on the conflict, following recent Israeli advances and air strikes on Lebanese locations.
