UN Report: Iran Cracks Down on Protesters, Unlawfully Detains Activists
Iran is cracking down on protesters and unlawfully detaining human rights activists, including new Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi. The UN report highlights the alarming number of executions in the Islamic Republic.
According to a recent report by United Nations independent investigator on human rights in Iran, the Islamic Republic is intensifying its clampdown on protesters and unlawfully detaining human rights activists. The report also highlights an "alarming" increase in executions carried out by the state.

The comprehensive study was conducted by Javaid Rehman, a Pakistani-born professor of international human rights law at Brunel University in London. His investigation covers the period from October 2022 through July and includes details about notable cases such as that of new Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi.
Nobel Laureate Among Detainees
Mohammadi, a tireless advocate for women's rights, has been detained even after being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. She continues her fight from Tehran's infamous Evin Prison where she is currently held captive. In his report to the General Assembly, Rehman singled out Mohammadi among lawyers and other human rights defenders who are imprisoned for their work.
Excessive Use of Force Against Protesters
The UN investigator was particularly critical of what he called "excessive and lethal use of force" used by Iranian authorities against nationwide protests sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini. Amini was a 22-year-old member of the Kurdish minority who had been arrested for wearing an "improper hijab" or headscarf back in 2022.
In response to these protests, Iranian forces have shown no restraint resulting in tragic consequences. As per Rehman’s findings, at least 537 people died during these protests which include 68 children and 48 women; hundreds more were injured or detained without due process.
An Alarming Trend
This trend indicates an alarming deterioration in respect for human rights in Iran. The state's response to dissent and protest is increasingly characterized by arbitrary detentions and the use of lethal force. This, coupled with a rise in executions, paints a grim picture of the current human rights situation in the country.
Rehman’s report serves as an urgent call for international attention on this matter. It underscores the need for global pressure on Iran to uphold its obligations under international human rights law and ensure that those who are fighting for justice and equality are not punished but protected.
In conclusion, while Mohammadi's Nobel Peace Prize sheds light on Iran's human rights abuses, it also highlights the courage of those who continue to fight against repression despite facing grave risks. The international community must respond decisively to these findings and take concrete steps towards holding Iranian authorities accountable for their actions.
