Iran Coal Mine Blast: 51 Dead, Several Injured
Iran Coal Mine Blast: An explosion at a coal mine in eastern Iran has resulted in the deaths of at least 51 individuals, as reported by state media. The incident, which occurred on Saturday night, was attributed to a gas leak. Over 20 people sustained injuries in the blast that took place in South Khorasan province.
The explosion happened around 21:00 local time (17:30 GMT) in Tabas, approximately 540 km southeast of Tehran. It was reportedly caused by a methane gas explosion affecting two blocks within the mine. Emergency services have been dispatched to the site to assist with rescue efforts.

Details of the Incident
South Khorasan's governor, Javad Ghenaatzadeh, stated that there were 69 workers present in the affected blocks at the time of the explosion. He explained that "there was an explosion and unfortunately 69 people were working in the B and C blocks of Madanjoo mine." In block C, there were 22 workers, while block B housed 47 individuals.
Initially, state media reported a death toll of 30. However, this figure has since been updated to reflect the increased number of casualties. The official IRNA news agency confirmed that the death toll had risen to 51, with more than 20 individuals injured.
Rescue Efforts and Official Response
Efforts are ongoing to determine how many miners remain trapped inside. Earlier reports from state TV indicated that 24 individuals were unaccounted for following the explosion. Authorities continue their search and rescue operations amidst challenging conditions.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed his condolences to those affected by this tragedy. In televised remarks, he stated: "I spoke with ministers and we will do our best to follow up." His comments highlight the government's commitment to addressing this disaster's aftermath.
The head of Iran's Red Crescent also provided updates on Sunday regarding missing persons. As rescue teams work tirelessly, families await news about their loved ones' fate amid this devastating event.
This tragic incident underscores the inherent dangers associated with mining operations worldwide. As investigations proceed into what led to this catastrophe, authorities aim to prevent similar occurrences in future mining activities across Iran.
