Iowa's Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg Resigns to Prioritise Family Life

Iowa Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg has resigned after more than seven years in office. "My time in public service must come to a close," he stated. Gov. Kim Reynolds announced the resignation, noting that Gregg is pursuing a career opportunity that allows him to focus more on his family.

Focus on Family

Gov. Reynolds expressed understanding of Gregg's decision, stating, "It comes as no surprise that he would choose to step down to prioritize his personal life." She highlighted that Gregg is a devoted husband and father, emphasising the importance of family to him.

In his statement, Gregg mentioned the need to focus on his family, which includes his wife and two children. "My kids are growing up too fast, and statewide elected offices force me to miss more of their lives than I can accept," he said.

Future Plans

Details about Gregg's next career move were not disclosed on Tuesday. According to Iowa law, the governor is required to appoint someone to fill the vacancy for the remainder of the term. Reynolds indicated she will make this appointment "later this fall."

Reynolds appointed Gregg as lieutenant governor in May 2017 after former Gov. Terry Branstad was named U.S. ambassador to China and Reynolds became governor. The Republican ticket won a full term in 2018 and was reelected in 2022.

Political Background

Gregg was the Republican nominee for attorney general in 2014 but lost to incumbent Democrat Tom Miller. Following this, Branstad appointed him as state public defender.

Gov. Reynolds praised Gregg's dedication, saying, "Adam is a devoted husband and father, and there is nothing more important to him than his family." She acknowledged his contributions during his tenure and wished him well in his future endeavours.

The resignation marks a significant change in Iowa's political landscape, with Reynolds set to appoint a new lieutenant governor soon.
