Inside the 7-Minute Louvre Museum Robbery: Chainsaw Robbers Target Napoleon-Era Jewels

A shocking robbery unfolded at the world-famous Louvre Museum in Paris when chainsaw-wielding thieves made off with priceless jewels from the Napoleon era in just seven minutes. The daring theft has left both authorities and art enthusiasts stunned as investigations continue into how such a heist occurred in one of the most secure museums in the world.

A Seven-Minute Heist at the Heart of Paris

Armed robbers reportedly arrived at the Louvre on a scooter early Sunday morning and executed the theft in less time than it takes to eat a plate of French fries. The museum, home to iconic artworks like the Mona Lisa, was immediately shut down following the incident.

According to French news agency AFP, the robbery occurred between 9:30 and 9:40 am. However, French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez revealed an even shorter timeline. "Individuals entered from outside with a cherry picker (a kind of hydraulic ladder) and stole priceless jewellery in an incident that lasted seven minutes," he said, as quoted by French outlet Le Parisien.

Priceless Napoleon-Era Jewels Stolen

Reports suggest the thieves targeted nine pieces from the Napoleon-era jewellery collection displayed in the Apollo Gallery. They entered through the Seine-facing side of the museum, which was under construction, using a goods lift for direct access to the targeted room.

After breaking windows, the robbers allegedly used small chainsaws to remove the jewels before escaping on motorbikes. The stolen collection holds immense cultural and historical significance, far beyond its market value.

The French Interior Ministry confirmed, "The stolen items have inestimable heritage and historical value." The ministry added, "The investigation has begun, and a detailed list of the stolen items is being compiled."

Officials Respond and Investigation Underway

French Culture Minister Rachida Dati addressed the incident, assuring the public there were no injuries. "No injuries to report. I am on site alongside the museum teams and the police. Investigations underway," she wrote in a social media post.

Authorities are now analyzing security footage and museum logs to trace the robbers' movements and identify potential security lapses. The use of construction access points and tools like chainsaws has raised questions about the planning and precision behind the operation.

Housing over 33,000 works of art from Mesopotamia, Egypt, and Europe, the Louvre is not only the world's most visited museum but also a symbol of cultural heritage. Its treasures include the Venus de Milo and Winged Victory of Samothrace, alongside Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa.
