India Backs UNHRC Resolution On Palestine
The resolution was passed with the support of 42 member states, including India. The voting process saw only two members, the US and Paraguay, voting against the resolution. Additionally, three countries-Albania, Argentina, and Cameroon-chose to abstain from voting in the council session. The resolution's adoption signifies international support for the Palestinian cause and underscores the importance of respecting the rights and aspirations of the Palestinian people for self-determination.
Key Points of the UNHRC Resolution on Palestine
Palestinian Self-Determination: The resolution reaffirmed the Palestinian people's fundamental right to self-determination, emphasizing their right to live freely with dignity. It emphasized the aspiration for an independent State of Palestine.
Call for Peaceful Solution: The resolution stressed the importance of achieving a just, comprehensive, and lasting peaceful solution to the Israel-Palestinian conflict based on international law and UN resolutions, as reported by First Post.
Ending Occupation: Israel, identified as "the occupying power", was called upon to immediately cease its occupation of Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem.
Addressing Barriers to Independence: Israel was urged to dismantle barriers and policies that impede Palestinian political independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
International Cooperation: All states were encouraged to refrain from recognizing and supporting Israel's breaches of international norms, and to work towards ending unlawful Israeli practices.
Support for Two-State Solution: The resolution reiterated support for the two-state solution, advocating for peaceful coexistence between Palestine and Israel, living side by side in peace and security.
The UNHRC resolution calling for an "immediate ceasefire" in Gaza and demanding that Israel immediately lift its 'illegal' blockade on the Gaza Strip saw India, along with four others, abstaining from the vote. France, Japan, Netherlands, and Romania also abstained, while Argentina, Bulgaria, Germany, and the US voted against the resolution, as per media reports.
