India's Alcohol-Related Deaths Now Twice As High As China's: WHO Report Highlights Growing Concern

A recent report by the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals a troubling trend: India's death rates due to alcohol consumption have soared to more than double those of China. This alarming statistic is part of a broader pattern of increased global alcohol consumption over the past 30 years, which resulted in 2.6 million alcohol-related deaths worldwide in 2019. The report highlights that more than three-quarters of these deaths were male, with a significant number linked to cancers associated with alcoholism.

Cancers associated with alcoholism showed rates of 181 men per 100,000 population and 126.4 women per 100,000 population.

India s Alcohol-Related Deaths Now Twice As High As China s WHO Report Highlights Growing Concern

WHO director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement, "Substance use severely harms individual health, increasing the risk of chronic diseases and mental health conditions and tragically resulting in millions of preventable deaths every year. It places a heavy burden on families and communities, increasing exposure to accidents, injuries, and violence."

Reports also showed that Indian teens between the ages of 15 and 19 tend to binge drink. The WHO report stated that 7.1% of male youngsters and 5.2% of females resort to heavy drinking, which in future would be highly detrimental to health.

India, with a population of over 1.4 billion, has struggled with alcoholism for decades, and the latest statistics paint a grim picture. The WHO report reveals that India accounted for over 3 lakh (300,000) alcohol-related deaths in 2020 alone, which is more than twice the number of such deaths in China

The WHO report indicates that alcohol-related deaths in India stem from a variety of causes, including liver disease, cardiovascular issues, road accidents, and violence. The high prevalence of these conditions points to the broader health implications of excessive alcohol consumption.

China's relative success in managing alcohol-related harm can serve as a model for India. The Chinese government's proactive stance on regulating alcohol advertising and availability, combined with robust public health campaigns, has helped keep alcohol-related mortality rates in check

The Indian government has acknowledged the issue and has taken steps to address it. The government has implemented various measures to regulate the sale and consumption of alcohol, including increasing taxes on alcoholic beverages and enforcing stricter regulations on the sale of alcohol

WHO report's findings on alcohol-related deaths in India are a stark reminder of the devastating impact of excessive alcohol consumption on individuals, families, and society as a whole. The Indian government, civil society, and individuals must come together to address this critical issue and work towards reducing the alarming number of alcohol-related deaths in the country. Only a concerted effort can help mitigate the significant health, economic, and social burdens associated with alcoholism in India.
