Indian Student Varun Raj Dies After Being Stabbed In Head At US Gym For 'Looking Weird'

The 24-year-old Indian student, Varun Raj Pucha, who was viciously attacked with a knife at a fitness center in the U.S. state of Indiana, has tragically lost his life, according to the university where he was pursuing his studies. Varun, a Computer Science student at the university, was attacked on October 29 by the assailant, Jordan Andrade, who stabbed him in the head with a knife. The reasons behind the attack are still under investigation by authorities.

Expressing profound grief, the university issued a statement mourning the loss of Varun and extended heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. The private university, located near Chicago in Valparaiso, Indiana, conveyed their support and prayers for Varun's loved ones during this devastating time.

Jordan Andrade, the attacker, was apprehended and is facing charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and attempted murder.

    The university assured ongoing support to Varun's family, maintaining contact with them, and offered assistance during this challenging period. They requested everyone to keep Varun's family in their thoughts and prayers.

    A service to remember and honor Varun is scheduled on campus for November 16, providing an opportunity for the university community to pay respects and commemorate his life.

    Varun, pursuing an MS in Computer Science, had traveled to the US in August 2022 and was due to return home to Khammam in Telangana after completing his course next year.

    Despite medical treatment, Varun's condition did not improve after the incident. Tragically, he passed away while remaining unconscious at a hospital in Fort Wayne. Anile Balleboyne, one of the few relatives Varun had in the US, revealed that his family and other relatives reside in India. She mentioned his aspirations for a quality education and his commitment to supporting his family financially and emotionally.

    The North American Telugu Society had raised USD 90,000 through GoFundMe by Wednesday to assist Varun's family during this challenging time.
