Eight Indians Face Charges in Nepal for Human Trafficking and Abduction

In a significant crackdown on human trafficking, eight Indian nationals have been formally charged with serious offences, including human trafficking, organised crime, and abduction. This development comes two months after their arrest for allegedly duping 11 Indian compatriots with the false promise of lucrative jobs abroad. The charges were filed following a meticulous investigation by the Nepal police, shedding light on the dark underbelly of international human trafficking networks.

Indians Charged in Nepal Trafficking Case

The case, which has been dubbed 'Dunki Operation' by the Nepal police, draws parallels to the plot of a 2023 movie by popular Indian actor Shahrukh Khan titled 'Dunki'. In mid-February, 11 Indians, primarily students, found themselves ensnared in a harrowing ordeal. They were held hostage for over two weeks in a rented house on the outskirts of Kathmandu, with assurances of being facilitated travel to the USA. Their rescue was executed after Nepal police dismantled a human trafficking racket, leading to the arrest of eight Indian mafia members and their Nepali accomplice.

The individuals facing charges have been identified as Abdul Rahim, Charanjit Singh, Nipun Gupta, Ramchandra Sharma, Hindu Singh Yadav, Ashok Kumar, Ravi Mewade, and Manish Kumar Malhotra. The Kathmandu District Police Circle has been instrumental in bringing these individuals to justice, submitting an investigation report to the Kathmandu District Attorney’s Office to register cases against them.

Acting on credible intelligence, the police conducted a raid on a private residence at Dhobikhola Corridor, Ratopul. This decisive action led to the liberation of the 11 Indians who had been taken hostage under the guise of facilitating their travel to the USA via Mexico. It was revealed that the agents, including the arrested Indian mafia members, had charged each victim Rs 4.5 million for this fraudulent service. Additionally, upon their arrival in Kathmandu, an extra USD 3,000 was demanded as a visa fee.

This case underscores the persistent threat posed by human trafficking networks and highlights the importance of international cooperation in combating such crimes. The swift action by Nepal police not only saved 11 individuals from potential exploitation but also brought to light a sophisticated scheme of deception targeting vulnerable students seeking better opportunities abroad.
