Indian national confesses to having funded Anwar al-Awlaki

Yahya Farooq Mohammad is said to have provided thousands of dollars to Anwar al-Awlaki, an al-Qaeda terrorist.

An Indian national has pleaded guilty for having funded dreaded al-Qaeda terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki. He has been sentenced to 27.5 years in prison for having links with al-Qaeda, said reports.

Yahya Farooq Mohammad is said to have provided thousands of dollars to Anwar al-Awlaki, an al-Qaeda terrorist who was killed in Yemen in 2011, for supporting violent jihad. Mohammed has pleaded guilty in this case.

Awlaki was a key leader of al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula and was designated as a global terrorist in 2010.

Mohammed, who was an engineering student in 2002-2004, has also been charged with soliciting the murder of a federal judge presiding over his case, an HT report said.

Mohammed, along with his two associates, travelled to Yemen in 2009 to meet al-Awlaki and gave the noted al-Qaeda terrorist 22,000 dollars, said the report.

Al-Awlaki was killed in a US drone strike in Yemen in September 2011.

Three others accused in the case - Ibrahim Mohammad, Asif Ahmed Salim, and Sultane Room Salim- have not pleaded guilty and the case against them is pending, said the report.
