India-US Relations: US Vice President JD Vance To Visit India On April 18

India-US relations: The White House on Wednesday announced United States Vice President JD Vance and his wife Usha Vance's India visit. As per the announcement, JD Vance is slated to visit India and Italy from April 18 onwards. It is going to be a week-long diplomatic visit aiming to strengthen economic and geopolitical ties.

US Vice President is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other key officials, to talk on mutual interests and benefits, particularly in trade and diplomatic cooperation.

During his stay, the Vice President is also expected to explore cultural landmarks in Jaipur and Agra, marking a significant engagement with India's rich heritage. This trip holds particular personal significance for Usha Vance, marking her inaugural visit to her ancestral homeland as the Second Lady of the United States. With roots in Andhra Pradesh, her participation brings a unique blend of Indian culture into the American political landscape, showcasing the profound connections between the two countries.

The bilateral discussions in India will notably include the advancement of a trade deal between the United States and India, an agreement that has been in the pipeline since Prime Minister Modi's visit to Washington DC in February. This visit by Modi was marked by discussions with then US President Donald Trump, aiming to finalize the first segment of the trade agreement within the year. The deal has been anticipated to foster economic growth and strengthen the trade partnership between the two nations, which has seen significant expansion, with trade figures surpassing $118 billion in the fiscal year 2023-24.

In addition to his engagements in India, Vice President Vance is set to conduct high-level talks in Italy, where he will meet with Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin. These meetings are expected to cover a range of topics, further emphasizing the US's commitment to maintaining and enhancing its relationships with key global partners.

The visit comes at a pivotal moment, following the imposition of a 27% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods by the Trump administration on April 2. However, a 90-day pause on these tariffs, exempting China, was later announced, offering a window for further negotiations. Sources indicate that while finalizing the trade agreement within this timeframe may be challenging, the foundational aspects of the deal could be agreed upon. This development follows the finalization of terms of reference for the bilateral trade deal discussions, as disclosed by an Indian trade official to Reuters, hinting at a feasible "win-win" agreement in the near future.

The United States remains India's largest trading partner, with the two countries enjoying a robust trade relationship.
