India-US Defence Innovation Summit Set for Next Month at Stanford
The third edition of the India-US Defence Acceleration Ecosystem INDUS-X Summit is set to take place at Stanford University in California early next month. This event will see top defence leaders from both nations discussing ways to enhance cross-border defence innovation ecosystems. Former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is among the notable speakers scheduled to address the summit, which will be hosted by the US India Strategic and Partnership Forum (USISPF) along with Stanford University’s Gordian Knot Centre for National Security Innovation and the Hoover Institution on September 9 and September 10.

Focus on Defence Innovation
The INDUS-X summit aims to bring together key policymakers from Washington and New Delhi to strengthen advanced technology partnerships in defence innovation. According to a media release, the summit will connect Indian and American leaders in defence innovation from startups, venture capital, academia, accelerators, and industry. This collaboration will create opportunities for co-production and investments in both countries.
The theme of this year's summit revolves around harnessing investment opportunities to enhance cross-border defence innovation ecosystems. The event will highlight the role of private capital and investments in the defence innovation sector. Launched in June 2023, INDUS-X aims to expand strategic technology partnerships and defence industrial cooperation between Indian and US governments, businesses, accelerators/incubators, investors, and academia.
Historical Context
The first edition of INDUS-X was held in Washington DC on June 21 last year, ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's historic state visit to the US. This inaugural event featured a joint showcasing of innovative technologies by Indian and US start-ups. Fifteen Indian start-ups and ten US start-ups from various domains such as maritime, AI, autonomous systems, and space presented their technologies to stakeholders.
Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) and the Defence Innovation Unit (DIU), along with the Office of the Secretary of Defence (OSD), lead INDUS-X for the Indian Ministry of Defence and the US Department of Defence (DoD), respectively. The exhibition was attended by senior US officials including Congressman Ro Khanna, who serves on the House Armed Services Committee as ranking member of the Subcommittee on Cyber, Innovative Technologies and Information Systems (CITI) and as co-chair of the Congressional Caucus on India and Indian Americans. Radha Iyengar Plumb, Deputy Under Secretary of Defence for Acquisition and Sustainment at the US DoD, also visited.
Upcoming Tech Expo
According to USISPF, this year’s INDUS-X Tech Expo will showcase cutting-edge technologies and innovations from defence and aerospace startups and companies. The event is expected to attract venture capital firms, academics, accelerators, and tech professionals from the Bay Area.
The summit will provide a platform for discussions on enhancing cross-border defence innovation ecosystems through investment opportunities. It will also spotlight how private capital can play a significant role in advancing defence innovation.
The upcoming summit at Stanford University promises to be a significant event for fostering collaboration between India and the US in defence technology. By bringing together leaders from various sectors, it aims to create a robust ecosystem for defence innovation that benefits both nations.
