India Takes Allegations of Plot to Kill American Citizen Seriously, US Officials Confirm

India is addressing accusations of a conspiracy to murder a US citizen, according to the United States. This was discussed during a meeting between Indian officials and representatives from the State Department and Department of Justice. "I don’t have a readout on the meeting yet," stated State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller during a press briefing.

India Investigates Allegations Against American Citizen

The meeting was part of ongoing discussions with India at high levels over recent months. Miller mentioned, "They have told us that they are taking the allegations seriously, that the activities contained in the DOJ indictment do not represent government policy." This statement was in response to questions about India's stance on the matter.

Allegations and Investigations

The meeting aimed to discuss India's active investigation into the allegations and for both sides to update each other on their respective inquiries. The focus was on sharing information about potential future steps. These discussions followed an Indian enquiry committee's visit to investigate claims involving an Indian official in a failed plot against a US national.

In November last year, US prosecutors accused Nikhil Gupta, an Indian national, of collaborating with an Indian government employee in a plot to assassinate Sikh separatist Gurpatwant Singh Pannun in New York. Gupta was arrested in the Czech Republic in June last year and extradited to the US on June 14.

India's Response and Ongoing Relations

India has denied these allegations but has set up an internal team to investigate further. Responding to another question, Miller emphasised India's strong partnership with the United States. He noted, "We work with them on a number of matters, including our shared vision for a free, open, prosperous Indo-Pacific."

Miller highlighted that the US and India maintain a relationship where concerns can be addressed openly. He added, "And when we have concerns, we have the kind of relationship where we can take those concerns to them and have very frank, candid conversations about those concerns. And that’s what we’ve been doing."

The ongoing dialogue between India and the United States underscores their commitment to resolving issues through cooperation and transparency. Both nations continue to engage in discussions to address mutual concerns while maintaining their strategic partnership.
