India-Russia Ties: Not Just Diplomacy, Says Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar highlighted the unique depth of India-Russia relations, transcending politics, diplomacy, and economics, during his interaction with Indologists at St. Petersburg State University.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the profound nature of the relationship between India and Russia, extending beyond mere diplomacy or economics. During his five-day official visit to Russia, Jaishankar engaged with Indologists at St. Petersburg State University, highlighting the crucial role of intellectuals and scholars in fostering understanding and bonding between the two nations.

Intellectuals' Contribution
Jaishankar underscored the importance of direct understanding between India and Russia, rather than relying on interpretations by other countries or societies. He acknowledged the efforts of both nations to identify new linkages and common points, emphasizing the potential of the intellectual world to make a significant difference. The minister also highlighted India's economic growth, approaching 4 trillion dollars, and expressed the nation's aspiration to become a developed country within the next 25 years.
Beyond Economic Development
Jaishankar emphasized that becoming a developed country entails more than just economic prosperity. It also involves a nation's awareness, consciousness, and pride in its traditions, heritage, and culture. He expressed his appreciation for the initiatives and ideas proposed by the Indologists during their interaction.
India-Russia Relations Amidst Global Challenges
Despite the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, India and Russia have maintained strong ties. India has refrained from condemning Russia's invasion of Ukraine, advocating for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis. Notably, India's import of Russian crude oil has witnessed a significant increase, despite concerns raised by Western countries.
The relationship between India and Russia stands as a testament to the enduring bonds that transcend political, economic, and diplomatic considerations. The contributions of intellectuals and scholars play a vital role in nurturing this relationship, shaping societal sentiments in both countries. As India strives towards becoming a developed nation, the preservation and celebration of its rich traditions, heritage, and culture remain integral to its identity and progress.
