Jaishankar Predicts More Russian Focus on Asia Amidst Broken Ties with West
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar provided insights into the current state of relations between India and Russia. Despite global volatility, he described their relationship as steady, albeit not spectacular. He also predicted that due to strained ties with the West over Ukraine, Russia would focus more on its Asian connections.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, during his recent appearance at the prestigious Hudson Institute think-tank, offered an insightful perspective on India's diplomatic relations with Russia. While acknowledging that the relationship may not have been spectacular, he emphasized its steady and stable nature over the years. This assertion comes in light of ongoing geopolitical tensions surrounding Russia’s involvement in Ukraine.
The Steady Indo-Russian Relationship

In response to a question about India's position amid the ongoing war in Ukraine, Jaishankar highlighted that every major international relationship has experienced significant volatility over the last 70 years. However, he pointed out that this has not been the case for New Delhi and Moscow. "India, Russia are very exceptional. It's been very steady. It may not be spectacular." He further added that bilateral ties seem to have stabilized at a certain level.
Russia's Shift Towards Asia
Jaishankar also commented on how global perception of Russia has changed due to its involvement in Ukraine - leading to strained relations with many Western countries. According to him, this shift is likely to result in Moscow focusing more attention towards Asia as it seeks new avenues for diplomacy and partnership.
"I think as a consequence of what is going on in Ukraine, it seems clear that in many ways Russia's relationship with the West has broken up," said Jaishankar. He went on to suggest that it would be logical for Russia to focus more on Asian nations given these circumstances; especially considering historical ties between Russian territories located within Asia itself.
Implications for Indian Diplomacy
This shift by Russia could potentially open up new possibilities for India’s foreign policy approach towards both Moscow and other key players within Asia-Pacific region including China and ASEAN nations among others.
While there are significant challenges to navigate, including balancing the interests of various regional powers and managing potential conflicts, India's steady relationship with Russia could serve as a strong foundation for fostering greater diplomatic engagement within Asia.
In conclusion, Jaishankar’s comments reflect the complex dynamics of international diplomacy in today's world. The geopolitical shifts caused by the Ukraine crisis have led to new alignments and realignments globally. Amidst this turbulence, India's steady relationship with Russia stands out as an exceptional case - underscoring the importance of stability in bilateral ties even amidst global volatility. As Russia potentially turns its focus towards Asia, it will be crucial for India to leverage its stable relations with Moscow while navigating the complexities of Asian geopolitics.
