Modi Emphasises India's Low Carbon Emissions Amid Global Climate Change Debate
Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently addressed a gathering of Indian-Americans in New York, emphasising India's minimal role in global environmental damage. He highlighted that India, with 17% of the world's population, contributes less than 4% to global carbon emissions. Modi's remarks seemed to critique Western nations, underscoring India's commitment to sustainable development.

India's focus on green energy is creating numerous jobs, according to Modi. He noted that while other countries have pursued carbon-intensive growth, India has chosen a different path. "Our carbon emission is almost negligible," he stated, attributing this to India's cultural respect for nature. The country is investing in solar, wind, hydro, green hydrogen, and nuclear energy.
Digital Transformation and Education
Modi also spoke about India's digital advancements. He pointed out that while people in the US carry physical wallets, Indians are increasingly using digital wallets. "No one can stop India now," he declared, expressing a desire for most mobile devices to use Made in India chips. This reflects India's growing technological capabilities.
The Prime Minister highlighted significant progress in education as well. He expressed a vision for India to become a global hub for education, inviting students worldwide to study there. The number of educational institutions has seen substantial growth, enhancing opportunities for learning and innovation.
China leads as the largest carbon emitter globally, followed by the US, India, and the EU. Despite this ranking, Modi stressed India's relatively low emissions compared to its population size. He reiterated that India's development strategy prioritises renewable energy sources over fossil fuels.
Modi's speech aimed to showcase India's achievements and aspirations on the international stage. By focusing on green energy and digital innovation, India seeks to position itself as a leader in sustainable development and technology. The Prime Minister's remarks reflect a broader commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
