India Restores Diplomatic Immunity For Canadian Province Trade Representative

The restoration of diplomatic immunity for the office of the Canadian province's trade representative in India has led to the return of the managing director of the Saskatchewan India office.

This development follows the implementation of the first such measure since October last year when 41 Canadian diplomats departed India after New Delhi announced that they would lose their diplomatic immunity if they remained, as reported by Hindustan Times.

India Restores Diplomatic Immunity For Canada, Here' Why

The official returning will have diplomatic immunity but will not be accredited as a Canadian diplomat, as clarified by a senior Indian official. This step is specific to Saskatchewan, reflecting the province's strong bilateral relationship with India, according to statements from Indian and Saskatchewan officials.

The decision to restore diplomatic immunity to the Saskatchewan India office managing director is seen as a result of India's approval, specifically for this individual, rather than a broader policy shift affecting Canada's diplomatic presence in India.

The development underscores the excellent relationship between Saskatchewan and India, as emphasized by Saskatchewan's Trade and Export Development Minister Jeremy Harrison. This action is being viewed as an experimental model by Indian authorities, designed to test the waters before potentially expanding similar arrangements to other Canadian provinces, as reported by Hindustan Times.

It follows Premier Scott Moe's delegation visit to India in February, during which discussions were held with senior members of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Cabinet to advocate for the reinstatement of diplomatic accreditation for Saskatchewan's managing director.

In 2023, total Canadian exports to India were valued at 5.1 billion Canadian dollars, with Saskatchewan accounting for 26% of this total (more than 1.3 billion Canadian dollars). Notably, 700 million Canadian dollars of this amount were directly linked to agri-food exports, underscoring the importance of Saskatchewan's contributions to trade with India, as per media reports.

The province's top five exports to India include lentils, potash, wood pulp, peas, and non-durum wheat, with Saskatchewan serving as the primary supplier of lentils and potash to India, according to official statements.
