The Palestinian Embassy expressed gratitude on Tuesday as the first tranche of USD 2.5 million was released by India to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), marking the initial instalment of its annual contribution of USD 5 million for the year 2024-2025.

It was further noted that India had pledged support to UNRWA during a recent conference held in New York, including the provision of medical assistance upon request. The embassy emphasized the significance of India's contributions and pledges in bolstering UNRWA's role, particularly amidst challenges from Israeli attempts to undermine its mandate.

The assistance from India, both financial and medical, was underscored as crucial for addressing the diverse needs of the Palestinian people, especially in light of the recent conflict in Gaza which has exacerbated humanitarian conditions. Approximately 2.2 million Palestinians, representing about 66% of the population in Gaza, are refugees displaced by historical events and ongoing conflicts.

UNRWA, established in 1949, serves over 6 million Palestinian refugees across Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon, providing essential services and support. The embassy highlighted ongoing Israeli efforts to diminish UNRWA's role and influence, advocating for India's proactive stance in preserving and strengthening the agency's mandate.

Looking ahead, the embassy expressed hope that India, leveraging its bilateral relationships and international influence, will continue to champion UNRWA's cause within key political and economic blocs worldwide. For Palestinians, UNRWA's existence is deeply intertwined with their aspirations for justice and the right of return, particularly following the Nakba in 1948.

In conclusion, the Palestinian Embassy emphasized the critical role of UNRWA in upholding Palestinian refugee rights and the broader implications of its support by India amidst regional challenges and geopolitical tensions.
