India–Iran Dialogue Aims to Resolve Tanker Issue and Protect Energy Supplies

India and Iran are engaging in diplomatic talks aimed at resolving a dispute over three seized tankers while also ensuring safe passage for ships travelling through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. The discussions highlight the longstanding cooperation and communication between the two countries during a period of regional uncertainty.

According to sources familiar with the matter, Iran has requested India to release three tankers that were seized near Indian waters in February. Indian authorities detained the vessels after alleging that they had concealed or altered their identities and were involved in suspicious ship-to-ship transfers at sea.

The vessels - Asphalt Star, Al Jafzia and Stellar Ruby - are currently anchored off the coast of Mumbai while investigations continue.

Diplomatic Dialogue Reflects Strong Ties

Despite the dispute, officials from both countries have maintained open diplomatic channels. Iran's ambassador in New Delhi recently met officials from India's foreign ministry to discuss the issue and explore solutions that would benefit both sides.

The talks come as India seeks safe movement for ships carrying energy supplies through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important energy corridors. Iran has already allowed two Indian liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) tankers to pass through the waterway, demonstrating cooperation between the two nations during a sensitive period for global shipping.

Ensuring Safe Passage for Indian Ships

According to Indian officials, at least 22 Indian-flagged vessels and more than 600 Indian seafarers remain in the Gulf region. Several of these ships are carrying LPG, a crucial cooking fuel used widely across India.

Ensuring their safe passage has become a priority for New Delhi, and diplomatic engagement with Tehran is seen as key to maintaining stability in maritime trade routes.

Medical Supplies Also Part of Discussions

Sources say Iran has also requested certain medicines and medical equipment during the discussions. The talks therefore extend beyond maritime issues and reflect broader cooperation between the two countries.

Balancing Security and Cooperation

India seized the tankers after the Coast Guard alleged that heavy fuel oil had been transferred between vessels at sea, raising concerns about illegal trading practices. However, the owner's consultant, Jugwinder Singh Brar, has denied any wrongdoing and said the ships were simply transporting bitumen cargo.

Even as investigations continue, both India and Iran appear committed to resolving the issue through dialogue. The ongoing talks underline how the two countries are working together to protect trade, energy supplies and regional stability despite the challenges surrounding the tanker dispute.
