India's Major Role at NAFSA Global Education Conference in New Orleans
Educational exchanges are pivotal in forging vital connections for mutual understanding, learning, and friendships, as highlighted by DC Manjunath, the Consul General of India in Houston. His remarks came during the inauguration of two Indian pavilions at the 76th NAFSA 2024 Conference & Expo in New Orleans, Louisiana. This event, known as the world's largest international annual education event, took place from May 28-31, drawing attention to the significant participation from India with over 40 major academic institutes represented.

The conference, under the theme "Resilience. Renewal. Community.", aimed at fostering resilience in the post-pandemic era, supporting education renewal, and building stronger local and global communities. It saw the gathering of 10,000 delegates from more than 110 countries, making it a melting pot of ideas and cultures. The Indian delegation's presence was notable for its size and the diversity of institutions it represented, both public and private.
The Study in India pavilion, managed by Educational Consultants India Limited (EdCIL) under the Union Ministry of Education, showcased a range of public higher education institutions alongside the National Book Trust. Meanwhile, the India Pavilion, under the Education Promotion Society for India (EPSI), featured 28 reputable private higher education institutes. This pavilion was led by Prof Rajive Kumar, a member secretary of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and Dr Prashant Bhalla, senior vice-president of EPSI.
During his inaugural address, Manjunath emphasized India's robust education system and high-quality research facilities. He pointed out that an increasing number of Indian institutions are expanding their global footprint and highlighted India's emergence as a prime destination for technologies such as data science and cybersecurity.
On the sidelines of the NAFSA conference, a special event titled "India's Higher Education Partnership & Dialogue" was organized. This event underscored India's economic growth and educational system development, including new opportunities in universities under India's new National Education Policy 2020. The dialogue also focused on facilities Indian universities offer and the empowerment of women in education. Notable attendees included Ministry of Education Joint Secretary Sanjog Kapoor and Director Varun Bhardwaj, along with EdCIL Executive Director Dr B Chandrasekar.
Participants from over 110 countries explored educational opportunities and engaged with representatives from elite institutions to discover educational possibilities in India. The participating institutions signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with universities across the US, Europe, Canada, and Japan, focusing on STEM and management programmes. These agreements aim to foster mutual academic collaboration and partnership for student exchange and faculty mobility to enhance curriculum and teaching learning in graduate and postgraduate programmes.
NAFSA 2024 served as a platform for showcasing academic programmes and research opportunities that promote international collaborations and partnerships. It also focused on enhancing the global reputation of Indian institutions, attracting international students, and promoting cross-cultural exchanges. Furthermore, it offered opportunities for faculty and student exchange programs, collaborative research projects, and sharing best practices in education.
The Study in India delegates also engaged with academic leadership from the Louisiana school of health sciences and Tulane University for designing postgraduate programmes in frontier areas such as climate science finance, sustainability, bioinformatics, public health, tropical medicine, and AI applications in healthcare.
This extensive participation at NAFSA 2024 underscores India's commitment to becoming a global education hub and highlights the country's readiness to attract international students by offering diverse higher education opportunities.
