India-France $10 Billion Defense Deals: Rafale Jets & Scorpene Submarines On the Horizon
India and France are moving toward finalizing two major defense deals worth over $10 billion, with both nations deepening their military cooperation. The agreements involve the purchase of 26 Rafale-M fighter jets for the Indian Navy's aircraft carriers and three additional Scorpene-class conventional submarines. These deals are expected to be presented for approval to the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) in the coming weeks.
Rafale-M Fighter Jets for INS Vikrant

A significant component of these deals is the acquisition of 26 Rafale-M fighter jets for India's INS Vikrant aircraft carrier. The Rafale-M is a naval variant of the highly regarded Rafale fighter jet, tailored for carrier-based operations. This acquisition marks a step forward in enhancing India's naval capabilities, further solidifying its strategic alliance with France.
Scorpene-Class Submarines: Strengthening India's Submarine Fleet
In addition to the Rafale-M jets, India is poised to purchase three more Scorpene-class conventional submarines. These submarines are an integral part of India's ongoing efforts to modernize its naval forces, especially amid growing regional security concerns.
PM Modi's Upcoming Visit to Paris
The defense deals come as Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Paris in February for the Artificial Intelligence Action Summit, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. This visit underscores the strengthening defense and technological ties between the two nations, particularly in the fields of AI and advanced military technology.
French Aircraft Carrier Arrives in India
On January 4, the French Navy's nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, FNS Charles de Gaulle, made a stopover at Goa's Mormugao port as part of its Mission CLEMENCEAU 25. The carrier is carrying the Rafale Marine jets, and during its stay in India, it will participate in joint war games with the Indian Air Force's Rafale jets in both Goa and Kochi. This collaboration highlights the ongoing military cooperation between the two nations.
A Growing Military Partnership
The deepening of military ties between India and France reflects their shared commitment to enhancing security and defense capabilities. The finalized defense deals, along with joint exercises, will further strengthen the strategic relationship between the two countries, positioning them as key partners in the evolving global defense landscape.
As India moves forward with these high-value acquisitions, the upcoming visit of Prime Minister Modi to France is expected to usher in even more robust defense and technological collaboration between the two nations, ensuring the continued growth of their strategic partnership.
