India Extends Sheikh Hasina's Visa Amid Bangladesh Extradition Request: What It Means
India has extended the visa of Sheikh Hasina, Bangladesh's former Prime Minister, who has been residing in India since August last year, according to sources.
This development comes at a time when the interim government of Bangladesh, led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, has intensified its demand for Hasina's extradition, accusing her of involvement in the violent student protests that left over 500 dead.

However, sources clarified that while her visa has been extended, Hasina has not been granted asylum. They emphasized that India does not have specific asylum legislation, and the extension should be seen as a technical measure to facilitate her continued stay in the country rather than a move towards offering refuge.
Background of Sheikh Hasina's Stay in India
Hasina fled Dhaka on August 5, 2024, amidst violent protests by students that led to significant loss of life and widespread unrest in Bangladesh. Since then, she has been staying in a safehouse in Delhi under tight security. Her stay in India has sparked political controversy, with Bangladesh's interim government requesting her extradition in December 2024.
Extradition Request and Allegations
The Bangladesh interim government, following a series of incidents during the 2024 protests, is accusing Hasina of being involved in enforced disappearances and killings. The Bangladeshi government formally requested her extradition on December 23, 2024. On January 8, 2025, Bangladesh's immigration department revoked the passports of 97 individuals, including Hasina, citing their involvement in violent actions and disappearances during the protests.
Bangladesh's spokesperson, Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, indicated that Hasina's involvement in the July killings was one of the reasons behind the passport revocations. The interim government claims that these measures are necessary as part of ongoing investigations into the violence.
India's Delicate Diplomatic Position
India's decision to extend Hasina's visa places it in a delicate diplomatic position. While the situation has not led to any immediate tensions between India and Bangladesh, the extradition request from Dhaka has complicated matters. The request has emerged in the context of political upheaval in Bangladesh, with critics alleging that the charges against Hasina are politically motivated. They argue that the interim government's actions, including the passport cancellations, are part of a broader effort to consolidate power ahead of the upcoming general elections.
As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how India will navigate the growing pressure from Bangladesh and handle the complexities surrounding Hasina's status.
