India Demands Review Of Indus Water Treaty: Seeking Major Modifications From Pakistan

India has formally notified Pakistan, requesting a review and modification of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT), which has governed the distribution of water from six rivers in the Indus system between the two countries for over 60 years.

The notice was issued on August 30 under Article XII(3) of the treaty.

India's request for modification stems from what it describes as fundamental and unforeseen changes in circumstances that necessitate a reassessment of the treaty's obligations, as reported by ANI. The notification underscores a need to address evolving issues and conditions affecting the water-sharing agreement.

The move follows a previous notice sent by India in January of last year, which sought changes to the treaty due to ongoing concerns about Pakistan's objections to Indian hydropower projects. India has accused Islamabad of repeatedly hindering the implementation of the treaty by raising objections to these projects.

The Indus Water Treaty, signed on September 19, 1960, after extensive negotiations spanning nine years, involves the World Bank as a signatory., as per media reports. The agreement outlines a framework for cooperation and information sharing between India and Pakistan concerning the use of their shared river resources.

This latest development signals a potential shift in the long-standing water dispute between the neighbouring nations and highlights the continuing complexities of managing shared water resources.
