The meeting, held in Ontario, will include an outreach session for G7 partner nations, with Jaishankar attending at the invitation of Canadian counterpart Anita Anand.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated that Jaishankar's participation underscores India's dedication to collaborating with global partners on international issues. It also highlights India's aim to amplify the Global South's voice in international forums. During the meeting, Jaishankar is expected to engage in several bilateral discussions, including one with Anand.

Canada has extended invitations to various countries as outreach partners for the G7 event. These include Australia, Brazil, India, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, South Korea, South Africa, and Ukraine. The gathering will address significant global economic and security concerns such as maritime security, economic resilience, energy security, critical minerals, and global prosperity.

Jaishankar's trip follows Anita Anand's recent visit to India last month. During her visit, both nations unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance cooperation in trade, energy, and critical minerals. They agreed to commence ministerial-level talks on bilateral trade and investment soon due to evolving global economic conditions and strategic priorities.

Historical Context of India-Canada Relations

India-Canada relations had deteriorated after former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested in 2023 a potential Indian connection to the killing of Sikh separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. India dismissed these allegations as "absurd." Tensions further escalated when India recalled its high commissioner and five other diplomats after Ottawa linked them to the Nijjar case. In retaliation, New Delhi expelled an equal number of Canadian diplomats.

The relationship began improving after Liberal Party leader Mark Carney won the April parliamentary election. This victory facilitated a diplomatic reset between the two nations. Both countries have since reinstated their high commissioners in each other's capitals, indicating a gradual revival of bilateral engagement.
