India Confirms Evacuation of Sri Lankan Nationals from Iran Amid Ongoing Conflict
India has pledged to assist Sri Lanka in evacuating its citizens from Iran amidst the ongoing conflict involving Israel. This gesture highlights the robust and lasting relationship between the two nations. Sri Lanka expressed its appreciation for India's prompt support in evacuating Sri Lankan nationals alongside Indian citizens, as shared by the Sri Lankan Foreign Ministry on X.

Evacuation Efforts in Iran
The Indian mission in Iran had previously announced its intention to aid in the evacuation of Nepali and Sri Lankan nationals. This decision followed requests from both governments. "On request of the Governments of Nepal and Sri Lanka, the Indian Embassy’s evacuation efforts in Iran will also cover Citizens of Nepal and Sri Lanka," stated the Indian Embassy.
Sri Lanka's Foreign Ministry has advised its citizens in Iran to reach out to the Indian Embassy in Tehran if they wish to return home. The ministry confirmed that arrangements have been made with India to facilitate their departure through available flights.
Current Situation of Sri Lankans Abroad
According to official figures, fewer than 100 Sri Lankans are currently residing in Iran. In contrast, approximately 20,000 Sri Lankans are employed in Israel. This disparity underscores the importance of coordinated evacuation efforts for those wishing to leave Iran.
Sri Lanka's gratitude towards India underscores the significance of international cooperation during crises. Such collaboration not only aids individuals but also strengthens diplomatic ties between countries.
