Independence Day 2024: Why India's Global Diaspora Is A Game-Changer For Developed Nations?
As India prepares to celebrate its 78th Independence Day, the country reflects on the immense contributions made by its population both at home and abroad. With over 1.4 billion people, more than half of whom are under the age of 25, India's youthful population is driving the nation to new heights.
However, it is the Indian diaspora, spread across the globe, that is proving to be a significant force in the development of other nations, particularly in the West, as reported by Firstpost.

A Snapshot of the Indian Diaspora
The Indian diaspora is the largest in the world, a title it has held since 2010, according to The Economist. As of now, there are approximately 15.85 million non-resident Indians (NRIs) and 19.57 million people of Indian origin (PIO) living outside India. This global community is not just vast in number but also influential in various sectors across the world.
Indian Diaspora in the United States
In the United States, Indian immigrants and their descendants have made remarkable contributions to the economy, culture, and politics. With 2.4 million Indian immigrants and another 3.3 million people of Indian origin, the community is deeply entrenched in American society.
Indian Americans are at the helm of some of the world's most powerful companies. Notably, Sundar Pichai of Google, Satya Nadella of Microsoft, and Shantanu Narayen of Adobe are among the two dozen Indian-origin executives leading Fortune 500 companies. These firms collectively employ 2.7 million Americans and generate around $1 trillion in revenue annually, as reported by Firstpost.
The influence of Indian-Americans extends beyond corporate boardrooms. The community owns 60% of all hotels in the US, which generates approximately $700 billion in revenue and provides jobs to 4 million people. Additionally, Indian Americans own 35-40% of convenience stores in the US, contributing $350 billion to $500 billion to the economy.
Contributions to Science, Education, and Technology
Indian-Americans have also made significant strides in academia and technology. They were awarded 11% of all National Institutes of Health grants in 2023 and contributed to 13% of scientific publications. In higher education, there are 22,000 Indian-origin faculty members in US colleges and universities, including prominent figures like Dr. Neeli Bendapudi at Penn State and Arun Majumdar at Stanford.
In terms of education, Indian immigrants are among the most highly educated groups in the US, with 80% holding at least a bachelor's degree. This is significantly higher than the 50% of Chinese immigrants and the 30% of the general population, as per media reports.
Political Influence and Cultural Impact
Indian-Americans are also increasingly visible in US politics. The 'Samosa Caucus,' comprising five Indian-Americans serving in Congress, is a testament to their growing political influence. Vice President Kamala Harris, with her Indian heritage, represents the pinnacle of this influence.
The cultural impact of the Indian diaspora is also evident, with Telugu becoming the fastest-growing language in the US.
The UK and Beyond: Indian Diaspora's Global Footprint
The Indian diaspora has a significant presence in the UK, where Indians are the most well-educated ethnic group and have one of the highest rates of home ownership, as per media reports. The community also has a strong representation in professional fields such as medicine, law, and education. In Germany, Indian immigrants are among the top earners, particularly in highly-skilled and high-paying sectors.
The Future of the Indian Diaspora
Experts predict that the influence of the Indian diaspora will only continue to grow. The economic power of this global community is substantial, and as they invest back in India, their impact on both the global and Indian economies is expected to increase.
While the diaspora's success contributes to their host countries, it also creates a positive image of India abroad, enhancing the country's soft power on the global stage, as per media reports. As India celebrates its 78th Independence Day, it is clear that the Indian diaspora is not just a product of the nation's past but a driving force for its future.
