Imran Khans Party Faces Major Hurdle as Election Commission Rejects Key Requests

Pakistans Election Commission dealt a significant blow to Imran Khans party by rejecting their organizational elections and denying the use of the cricket bat as their electoral symbol, leading to uncertainty in their participation in the upcoming general elections.

In a significant setback for Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Pakistan's top election commission, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), has rejected the party's organizational elections and its request to retain the cricket bat as its electoral symbol for the upcoming February 8 general elections.

ECP's Verdict

A five-member panel of the ECP issued the reserved verdict on Friday after concluding the hearing of multiple petitions filed by PTI members challenging the party elections held on December 2 in Peshawar. The panel ruled that the PTI failed to conduct polls according to its party constitution and cannot retain the cricket bat as its electoral symbol.

Gohar Khan Loses Chairmanship

With this decision, Gohar Khan, a close aide of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, lost his position as PTI chairman just days after his appointment. Khan, a former iconic international cricketer, is closely associated with the cricket bat and is currently lodged in Adiala Jail at Rawalpindi facing multiple cases.

PTI's Options

Following the ECP's judgment, the PTI has several options. It can either challenge the decision in the Supreme Court, field its candidates as independents, or enter into an alliance with another party to allow its candidates to use that party's symbol for the elections.

Challenges Raised by Petitioners

The ECP's decision came in response to petitions filed by several PTI members, led by the party's estranged former leader Akbar S Ahmad. The petitioners accused the party of conducting a selection process in the name of party elections, aiming to sideline party workers and hand over control to a few lawyers.

ECP's Earlier Order and Intra-Party Polls

Earlier, following an order by the ECP to organize polls within the party to retain the cricket bat as its party symbol, the PTI held intra-party polls, electing Barrister Gohar Khan as the new chairman, replacing Imran Khan. Khan had decided to stay away from party elections to avoid legal challenges based on his disqualification by the ECP in the Toshakhana corruption case.

PTI Delegation Meets ECP

The ECP's verdict came hours after a delegation of the PTI met with ECP officials earlier on Friday, following a directive by the Supreme Court in response to a complaint that the party was not being provided a level playing field.

The ECP's rejection of PTI's organizational elections and cricket bat symbol poses significant challenges for the party as it prepares for the upcoming general elections. The PTI's leadership will need to carefully consider its next steps to ensure its participation in the electoral process.
