Imran Khan Defends Bushra Bibi's Remarks on Saudi Arabia Visit Amid Political Backlash

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, recently sparked controversy with her comments about Khan's troubles starting after a visit to Saudi Arabia. This has led to criticism from various political figures in Pakistan. Khan, who has been in Adiala Jail since August last year, defended his wife, stating she did not mention Saudi Arabia in her remarks.

Political Reactions and Criticism

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and other officials criticised Bushra Bibi's comments. They argued that her statements were harmful to Pakistan's relations with Saudi Arabia. Sharif emphasised the importance of maintaining good relations with countries like Saudi Arabia, which have supported Pakistan during economic difficulties.

In a video statement, Bushra Bibi claimed that Khan's problems began after he visited Medina barefoot. She alleged that former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa received calls questioning Khan's actions. The video was intended to rally support for Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), ahead of a protest in Islamabad but instead stirred controversy.

Defence and Clarifications

Khan clarified on X that his wife did not mention Saudi Arabia and reiterated the country's support for Pakistan. He recalled Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's outreach after an assassination attempt on him last November. Khan accused Bajwa of orchestrating his government's downfall and blocking investigations into the alleged conspiracy.

General Bajwa refuted Bushra Bibi's claims, calling them false. He questioned how a friendly nation could interfere in Pakistan's internal matters. Bajwa highlighted the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Summit held in Islamabad as evidence of strong ties between the two countries.

Statements from Government Officials

Defence Minister Asif Khawaja condemned Bushra Bibi's remarks, emphasising Pakistan's close ties with Saudi Arabia. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar described the relationship as one based on mutual respect and criticised attempts to politicise foreign relations for political gain.

Information Minister Atta Tarar also condemned the statements, stressing that making false claims for political advantage is unacceptable. He reminded that similar allegations had been made against the US previously, which were also against national interests.

Internal Party Reactions

Within PTI, some leaders expressed surprise at Bushra Bibi's comments. They felt these statements could undermine the party's momentum and affect Khan's legal situation. A senior leader noted that while Khan might secure bail in remaining cases, his wife's remarks could complicate matters.

A PTI lawyer described the claims as damaging and lamented the party's lack of direction. The lawyer criticised the leadership for making mistakes at critical times and failing to provide clear guidance.

Public Reactions and Future Implications

PTI activist Salman Ahmad criticised Bushra Bibi on social media, calling her corrupt and greedy. He dismissed her claim about Khan being ousted due to walking barefoot in Medina as absurd. Meanwhile, Pakistan continues to seek financial assistance from Saudi Arabia and China to address its economic challenges.

The PTI has called for a long march to Islamabad to demand Khan's release, challenge alleged election fraud, and restore judicial independence by revoking recent constitutional amendments. The unfolding events highlight ongoing political tensions in Pakistan amidst economic struggles.
