IMF Deputy MD Gita Gopinath Likely To Resign, May Rejoin Harvard University

Indian-American economist Gita Gopinath is likely to step down as first deputy managing director at the International Monetary Fund (IMF). As per the reports, Gita Gopinath will return to Harvard University as a professor of economics. She will join the Harvard Economics Department on September 1 as the first Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics.

"After nearly 7 amazing years at the IMF, I have decided to return to my academic roots," Gopinath, the first female chief economist in IMF history, said in a post on X.

Academic Journey and Achievements

Before her tenure at the IMF, Gopinath held significant academic positions. She was the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard from 2005 to 2022. Prior to that, she served as an assistant professor of economics at the University of Chicago's Booth School of Business from 2001 to 2005.

Gopinath joined the IMF in January 2019 as chief economist. Her contributions led to her promotion as the first deputy managing director in January 2022. Her work has been pivotal in addressing global economic challenges during her time at the IMF.

Future Plans and Contributions

"I now return to my roots in academia, where I look forward to continuing to push the research frontier in international finance and macroeconomics to address global challenges, and to training the next generation of economists," she said.

Gopinath's return to academia marks a new chapter where she aims to further research in international finance and macroeconomics. Her focus will be on tackling global issues while nurturing future economists through education and mentorship.
