Hurricane Milton Strikes Florida: 17 Inches Of Rain Causes Widespread Flooding
Hurricane Milton is currently wreaking havoc across the Florida peninsula, bringing destructive storm surges, powerful winds, and potentially catastrophic flooding rainfall. Here's the latest on the storm's impact:
Current Status and Path: Hurricane Milton is accelerating east-northeastward across Central Florida and is expected to reach the Atlantic by sunrise on Thursday morning. The storm is presently located in the Orlando metro area after making landfall on Wednesday evening south of Tampa Bay in Siesta Key.

Severe Weather Conditions: As the hurricane progresses, bands of heavy rain accompanied by strong wind gusts are spreading across various parts of the state. A radar snapshot reveals the extent of the storm's reach, with a "flash flood emergency" currently in effect for Pasco, Hillsborough, and Polk Counties, which includes cities like Lakeland, Winter Haven, and Wesley Chapel. Reports indicate that 8-12 inches of rain have already fallen in these regions.
In southern Pinellas County, coastal Hillsborough County, and western Manatee County, rainfall totals have ranged from 10-17 inches. Notably, St. Petersburg recorded over five inches of rain in just one hour, along with a wind gust of 90 mph. Flooding has been reported in parts of downtown Tampa and St. Petersburg, where some areas have received as much as 17 inches of rain. Tampa has set a new monthly rainfall record, surpassing 11 inches in a single day-a record that had stood for over a century. Waist-deep water has been reported in St. Petersburg and Tampa due to the severe rainfall-driven flooding.
Wind Damage Reports Hurricane-force winds are sweeping through Central Florida, with gusts recorded up to 105 mph in Egmont Channel, 102 mph in Sarasota, 101 mph in St. Petersburg, 97 mph in Venice, 93 mph in Tampa, and 90 mph in Venice. Venice also recorded a sustained wind of 78 mph at an elevated station. Significant damage has been reported at St. Petersburg's Tropicana Field and to several cranes in downtown.
To the east, Orlando International Airport recorded a wind gust of 86 mph, while Daytona Beach reported gusts of 78 mph, Cape Canaveral saw 76 mph, and Leesburg experienced gusts up to 75 mph.
Storm Surge Impact Water levels near Sarasota rose by over 8 feet at the time of landfall on Wednesday evening. A storm surge of 3-6 feet has been recorded from Naples to Charlotte Harbor, with additional inundation likely in Manatee and Sarasota counties. Interestingly, water levels fell by approximately 5 feet at the top of Tampa Bay due to blowout winds, while the mouth of Tampa Bay experienced a rise of 1-2 feet. Naples recorded a significant storm surge of 5.75 feet.
As Hurricane Milton continues to move through Florida, residents are urged to stay updated on the latest weather advisories and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
