Hunter Biden Investigation: Special Counsel to Testify Before Congressional Committee
Special counsel overseeing the Hunter Biden investigation, David Weiss, is expected to testify before a Congressional committee behind closed doors as a GOP probe into the Justice Department's handling of the case continues.
In a significant development, the special counsel overseeing the Hunter Biden investigation, David Weiss, is expected to testify before a Congressional committee behind closed doors. This testimony comes as part of an ongoing GOP probe into the Justice Department's handling of the case.
Weiss's Testimony

Weiss is scheduled to appear for a transcribed interview before members of the House Judiciary Committee on November 7. Sources familiar with the matter, speaking on the condition of anonymity, confirmed this rare occurrence to The Associated Press. The interview is part of a Republican-led investigation into potential mishandling of the Hunter Biden case by the Justice Department.
GOP Probe and Impeachment Inquiry
The investigation into Hunter Biden's business dealings has been a central focus of the GOP-led impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden. House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, who is also running for speaker, has been leading the probe. The inquiry has largely brought legislative business to a standstill.
Justice Department's Offer
The Justice Department has previously offered to allow Weiss to testify about his authority in the Hunter Biden investigation. The department acknowledged that it is an extraordinary step for a prosecutor to speak to Congress while a criminal investigation is still ongoing. However, the department stated that it is warranted due to concerns about any misrepresentations that could harm public confidence in the investigation.
Weiss's Expected Appearance
Weiss is expected to make a single appearance before the House Judiciary Committee next month. However, the Justice Department noted in a letter to the committee last month that Weiss could be called on for public testimony after the investigation is complete.
Ongoing Investigation and Potential Charges
Weiss, who also serves as the US Attorney for Delaware, has been investigating Hunter Biden for five years. The case was expected to conclude with a plea deal on tax and gun charges, avoiding jail time for Hunter Biden. However, the agreement fell apart after facing harsh criticism from Republicans, who labeled it a sweetheart deal. A judge also raised questions about the terms of the agreement in court.
Currently, Hunter Biden faces three felony firearm charges related to his purchase of a gun in 2018, during a period when he has acknowledged struggling with addiction. Weiss has also indicated the possibility of tax charges against Hunter Biden, although none have been filed yet.
The upcoming testimony of special counsel David Weiss before the House Judiciary Committee is a significant development in the ongoing Hunter Biden investigation. Weiss's testimony is expected to shed light on the handling of the case by the Justice Department and address concerns raised by Republicans. As the investigation continues, the public awaits further information on potential charges against Hunter Biden.
