Hunger in Haiti Surges to Famine Levels as Gang Violence Disrupts Food Access

Haiti is grappling with severe hunger, with nearly 6,000 people facing starvation and almost half of its 11 million population experiencing critical food insecurity. Gang violence in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas has exacerbated the crisis, according to a recent report. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification noted a 1.2 million increase in those facing crisis levels of hunger over the past year.

Haiti Faces Famine Due to Gang Violence

Gang violence has severely disrupted the transportation of goods, making it difficult for people to access food. Additionally, inflation has surged, with food now accounting for 70% of household expenses. The cost of a basic food basket rose by over 11% last year, while inflation reached 30% in July. These factors have compounded the hunger crisis.

Impact of Gang Violence on Food Security

Gangs control 80% of Port-au-Prince and key roads, further hindering food distribution. From April to June, gang-related violence resulted in at least 1,379 casualties and 428 kidnappings. Over 700,000 people have been displaced due to this violence in recent years. "Haiti continues to face a worsening humanitarian crisis," the report stated.

The report also highlighted that those experiencing famine are living in makeshift shelters in Port-au-Prince. Among them is Joceline St-Louis, a mother of two young boys. "Food doesn't come around very often," she said, relying on others to feed her children. When aid arrives, it often leads to fights over scarce resources.

Personal Stories Amidst Crisis

St-Louis shared her struggles, saying she sometimes feels so depressed that she contemplates harming herself and her children. Her youngest son requires a peanut butter mix from a clinic to prevent malnutrition. In another shelter, Judeline Auguste depends on remittances to feed herself and her son but finds it challenging to provide even one meal a day.

Meanwhile, those facing urgent hunger levels reside in Haiti's northern, central, and southern regions. Jean Yonel fled his home after gangs raided his neighbourhood. He and his family often survive on minimal meals like white rice or spaghetti. Yonel used to work as a mason but now searches for wood to make charcoal due to dwindling construction jobs.

Economic Struggles and Natural Disasters

Haiti's economic challenges are compounded by natural disasters like the August 2021 earthquake and Hurricane Matthew in 2016. These events have left parts of the country struggling to recover. Martine Villeneuve from Action Against Hunger expressed shock at the scale of hunger affecting even areas not directly impacted by gang violence.

Villeneuve noted that double-digit inflation has limited what Haitians can afford, with food prices soaring. The report estimates that two million Haitians are facing severe hunger levels. "This is shocking," Villeneuve said about the situation's magnitude.

The ongoing humanitarian crisis demands urgent attention as armed gang violence continues to disrupt daily life and force more people from their homes. The rising levels of acute food insecurity highlight the need for immediate intervention to address both the violence and economic challenges facing Haiti.
