How SPG Foiled Possible Sniper Threat To PM Modi At Gandhi Statue In Kyiv
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was safeguarded by bullet-resistant shields provided by the Special Protection Group (SPG) as he paid tribute to the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Oasis of Peace Park in Kyiv, according to a report by Hindustan Times.
The heightened security measures were a response to growing anti-India sentiment in Ukraine, largely due to PM Modi's perceived closeness with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

SPG Director Alok Sharma deployed 60 commandos to ensure the Prime Minister's safety during the visit, reflecting concerns about the difficulties Indians in Ukraine are facing, as many Ukrainians blame India for siding with Russia.
Throughout PM Modi's seven-hour stay in Kyiv, the SPG maintained a state of high alert. The deployment of bullet-resistant shields at the Peace Park was a precaution against potential sniper threats as the Prime Minister walked through the area. Video footage aired by news channels showed the shields in place, with security personnel securing the vicinity.
The PM's team reportedly breathed a sigh of relief after PM Modi departed for Poland by train, where he is scheduled to catch a flight to New Delhi later tonight.
In his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday, Prime Minister Modi urged Ukraine and Russia to engage in direct negotiations to expedite the resolution of the ongoing war. He emphasized that India has always stood on the side of peace since the conflict began.
During their talks, which took place under the shadow of the ongoing war, Modi reiterated India's willingness to play an "active role" in peace efforts, even offering his personal involvement in ending the conflict.
The discussions also focused on ways to enhance bilateral cooperation in key areas such as trade, defense, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and education.
Following their meeting, India and Ukraine signed four agreements to boost cooperation in agriculture, the food industry, medicine, culture, and humanitarian assistance, according to official sources.
