This trend is similar to "catfishing," where individuals fabricate online personas, but with a specific focus on falsifying one's location.

Comedian Jared Fried brought attention to this phenomenon on TikTok, sharing his observations of individuals from places like Long Island and Westchester claiming to live in New York City.

He highlighted the frustration this dishonesty can cause, as would-be suitors struggle to coordinate dates due to the unexpected distance.

"Every few conversations on [a dating] app, there's a woman who is like ... 'Oh, I live in Westchester,' or 'I live on Long Island,'" Fried noted, despite their profiles indicating they were based in the city.

Fried's revelation has struck a chord with many, shedding light on the absurdity of digital deception in the search for love. However, some women defended the practice, noting that listing NYC as their location significantly increased their matches.

A woman from central New Jersey admitted that changing her location to Midtown on her dating profile led to a successful match within just two months.

Another woman candidly stated, "As long as men height-fish, income-fish, marital status-fish, I will keep hood fishing."
