Armed Man Found Dead in Hermosa Beach Home Garage After Standoff with Police

An armed man who faced off with officers at a Hermosa Beach home for several hours on Christmas Eve was later found dead in the homes garage, authorities told local media.

On Christmas Eve, an armed man engaged in a standoff with law enforcement officers at a residence in Hermosa Beach, California. The incident culminated with the discovery of the man's body inside the home's garage.

Standoff and Evacuations

The Los Angeles County Fire Department responded to a 911 call on 11th Street in Hermosa Beach at approximately 3:30 pm on Sunday. Witnesses reported hearing an argument and observing a man armed with a gun entering a two-story home. Despite police presence, the individual refused to surrender.

Shortly before 5 pm, a fire broke out in the garage of the residence. As a precautionary measure, the immediate family members of the suspect, including children, had already evacuated the premises prior to police arrival. Consequently, neighboring homes were also evacuated to ensure the safety of the community.

Police Response and Investigation

Hermosa Beach Police Chief Paul LeBaron stated that explosions, possibly gunshots, were heard during the standoff. However, officers did not believe they were targeted. Firefighters and police officers refrained from entering the home due to the uncertain presence of the armed individual.

Firefighters established a defensive perimeter around the garage to contain the fire and prevent its spread to neighboring structures. At approximately 9:30 pm, law enforcement officers entered the residence to apprehend the suspect but discovered him deceased inside the garage.

Ongoing Investigation

The identity of the deceased individual has not been disclosed as of Monday morning. The Los Angeles County Coroner's Office will determine the cause of death, while the county fire department continues to investigate the origin of the fire.
