Heightened Nuclear Risks As Russia, China Forge Closer Ties: NATO Chief

As tensions grow in eastern Europe with the war in Ukraine and the growing relations between two of the world's largest superpowers, Russia and China, and an extended arm towards North Korea, the Western Alliance prepares itself for the worst.

In a critical move, NATO has announced plans to bolster its deployment of nuclear weapons in response to escalating threats posed by Russia and China. The decision comes amidst growing concerns within the alliance about the aggressive military posture exhibited by both Moscow and Beijing in recent geopolitical developments.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg

In the past few years, we have seen many growing trade relations between Russia and China as they strengthen their relationship. Many senior U.S. officials from the Biden administration mentioned that 90% of the microchips used by Russians in tanks, missiles, and drones for the war have been supplied by China.

The officials also stated that China has been helping Russia with their satellite program to help them have a better overview of the battlefield in Ukraine. This proves that China and Russia look forward to being strong military allies which pose a threat to the West.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg mentioned that NATO is still in talks to release more nuclear weapons and keep them on standby due to the growing threat faced. Stoltenberg commented on how nuclear transparency is fundamental for NATO's nuclear strategy in order to prepare the alliance for a "more dangerous world."

"NATO's aim is, of course, a world without nuclear weapons, but as long as nuclear weapons exist, we will remain a nuclear alliance, because a world where Russia, China and North Korea have nuclear weapons, and NATO does not, is a more dangerous world," he added.

The deployment of additional nuclear arms is expected to include upgrades to existing infrastructure and possibly the introduction of advanced weaponry capable of countering modern military threats. This move underscores NATO's commitment to adapt to evolving security challenges while reaffirming its commitment to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).

However, the decision has not been without controversy, with critics arguing that an escalation in nuclear capabilities could potentially exacerbate tensions and trigger an arms race. The announcement comes at a time of heightened geopolitical tensions, with NATO and its allies increasingly focused on addressing the multifaceted challenges posed by Russia's assertive foreign policy and China's expanding military capabilities.

The alliance's decision to bolster its nuclear deterrent underscores its determination to uphold security and stability in an uncertain global landscape.

Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has accused the U.S. and its European allies that by providing Ukraine with weapons worth billions of dollars, they have driven the world to an extent where Moscow might have to resort to deploying nuclear weaponry. He warned that in extreme situations Moscow might resort to using weapons of mass destruction (WMD) for self-defense.
