Peter Hegseth Commits to Reviewing India-US Defence Ties and Agreements if Confirmed as Defence Secretary
Peter Hegseth, nominated for Defence Secretary, highlighted the significant growth in India-US defence ties over the last ten years. During his confirmation hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, he expressed intentions to evaluate existing agreements with India if confirmed. Hegseth emphasised the importance of this partnership, noting its evolution through joint military exercises, defence sales, and strategic discussions.

He acknowledged the need for the US to enhance its military presence and capabilities in the Indo-Pacific region. This is crucial due to China's rapid military expansion and the necessity to restore deterrence. Hegseth stated his commitment to reviewing the US posture in this area and identifying ways to prioritise these efforts.
Strengthening Indo-Pacific Strategy
Hegseth assured that he would collaborate with Congress to secure adequate funding for reinforcing US military posture in the Indo-Pacific. He plans to work with the Undersecretary of Defence for Comptroller and other stakeholders to assess if the Pacific Deterrence Initiative meets their military objectives in the region.
In response to a written question from the Senate Armed Services Committee, Hegseth mentioned his intention to coordinate with the State and Commerce Departments. He aims to provide recommendations on India-US defence relations to the President after reviewing current agreements.
"If confirmed, I will review our posture in the Indo-Pacific and identify ways to prioritise such efforts," Hegseth stated. He stressed his dedication to ensuring sufficient funding for strengthening deterrence in this strategically important region.
Hegseth's remarks reflect a broader strategy aimed at countering China's influence in the Indo-Pacific. By focusing on enhancing operational capabilities and force posture, he seeks to address emerging security challenges effectively.
The nominee's approach underscores a commitment to maintaining robust defence partnerships globally. His focus on India as a key ally highlights the strategic importance of this relationship in addressing regional security dynamics.
Hegseth's potential confirmation could lead to a comprehensive review of defence policies and agreements with India. This review aims to bolster bilateral cooperation and ensure alignment with broader US strategic goals.
