Images shared on social media show heavy traffic in Oahu and downtown Honolulu, as families rush inland amid fears of an approaching tsunami. Authorities have urged the public to follow evacuation orders and remain alert.

According to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC), if a tsunami occurs, the first wave could reach Hawaii by 7:17 PM HST on Tuesday, July 29, 2025.

"Based on all available data, a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter," said the U.S. Tsunami Warning System.

US West Coast and Japan Also on Alert

The tsunami threat extends far beyond Hawaii. Similar warnings have been issued for Alaska, the US West Coast, and parts of Canada. Cities like Los Angeles, San Diego, Seattle, San Francisco, and Vancouver are closely monitoring the situation.

In Japan, the eastern and northern coasts, including Tokyo, are also under tsunami alert. Officials are preparing emergency response measures as the situation evolves.

The U.S. Tsunami Warning System confirmed that assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of the threat to Hawaii and neighboring regions. Emergency services remain on high alert, with updates expected hourly or more frequently.
