No Tsunami Warning

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has stated that there is no tsunami threat following the earthquake. However, some shaking was felt in Honolulu on the island of Oahu, approximately 200 miles (322 kilometers) to the north.

Local Reactions

The Hawaii Emergency Management Agency (HEMA) reported that many areas may have experienced strong shaking from the earthquake, which occurred shortly after 10 a.m. local time. Despite the intensity, HEMA reiterated that there was no threat of a tsunami.

Big Island Mayor Mitch Roth, who was in Honolulu for a cardiologist appointment, felt the earthquake and immediately contacted emergency management officials. He expressed concerns about potential damage and emphasized that it was a "good-sized earthquake." However, he reassured the public that there was no tsunami threat.

Impact on Infrastructure

Julia Neal, the owner of Pahala Plantation Cottages, reported that a mirror and brass lamp fell during the forceful shaking. She described the rattling of old wooden plantation homes in the area.

Derek Nelson, the manager of the Kona Canoe Club restaurant in Kona, on the island's western side, stated that everyone felt the earthquake significantly. He mentioned that there was no damage, but the shaking was intense enough to cause some wobbliness and rattle the windows in the village.

The 5.7 magnitude earthquake near the Big Island of Hawaii caused strong shaking in some areas but did not pose a tsunami threat. Local authorities are assessing potential damage, and there have been no reports of significant injuries or major structural damage.
