Harris Chooses Walz as Running Mate, Setting Stage for New Election Battle

The upcoming election has taken an unexpected turn with Vice President Kamala Harris selecting Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. This decision comes after President Joe Biden's withdrawal from the race. Harris and Walz will face off against Republican Donald Trump and his running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance.

Harris-Walz vs. Trump-Vance in 2024

Walz and Vance are seen as choices to solidify their respective party bases rather than to attract new voters in key battleground states. Both candidates will be campaigning in overlapping states, with Walz joining Harris in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Michigan, Arizona, and Nevada. Meanwhile, Vance will follow a similar route to counter their campaign efforts.

Impact of Walz on Harris' Campaign

Walz's selection aims to calm the Democratic Party's left wing, which was concerned about the potential nomination of Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro. Shapiro's stance could have alienated Arab American and younger voters. Harris' team views Walz as a safe choice who can maintain party unity ahead of the Democratic National Convention in Chicago on August 19.

Progressives appreciate Walz's populist message, reminiscent of his past roles as a social studies teacher and football coach. Activists hope that Walz will help Harris adopt a more nuanced approach to issues like Israel and Gaza compared to Shapiro.

Exciting Core Supporters

Both vice-presidential picks seem focused on energising their existing supporters rather than expanding their coalitions. Walz hails from Minnesota, a solidly Democratic state, while Vance comes from Ohio, a reliably Republican state. Each candidate is expected to appeal to Midwestern voters in key "blue wall" states like Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin due to geographical proximity.

Harris' allies highlight Walz's appeal to rural voters, although his 2022 re-election margins were similar to Biden's 2020 win in Minnesota. Trump won 60% of rural and small-town voters nationwide in 2020, according to AP VoteCast.

Vance's Counter-Programming Strategy

Vance plans to shadow Harris and Walz over the next two days in battleground states such as Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin. His goal is to criticise the Biden administration's policies and attack Harris' record on the economy, public safety, and immigration.

In Philadelphia on Tuesday, Vance held an event before Harris formally introduced Walz at a rally. He stated, "I absolutely want to debate Tim Walz, but not until after the Democratic convention." Harris' team welcomed Vance's contrasting approach. "We appreciate JD Vance providing voters in battleground states exactly the split-screen that defines the choice this November," said Harris campaign spokesman Charles Lutvak.

Challenges Ahead

While Walz's selection answers one major question for Democrats, numerous challenges remain for the final months of this unpredictable race. Potential developments include a wider war in the Middle East or a Federal Reserve rate cut that could stabilise global financial markets.

The possibility of Trump and Harris debating in September remains uncertain following Biden's exit from the race. Recent weeks have seen Biden's poor debate performance against Trump on June 27, an assassination attempt on Trump, Biden's withdrawal from the race, and Harris' rapid rise among Democrats.

As both tickets are now set, voters will scrutinise positions closely. Small differences could sway undecided voters in what may be a tight election. Global events can disrupt campaign narratives unexpectedly, as seen with the financial crisis in 2008 and the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

This year has shown that election surprises are no longer confined to October.
