Harris and Trump Navigate Mideast Conflict and Port Strike in Final Campaign Weeks
A series of challenges, including a severe hurricane, escalating Middle East conflict, and a dockworkers' strike affecting the US economy, are influencing the final weeks of the presidential campaign. These events could sway public opinion as voters choose between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump. The handling of these issues by the candidates may significantly impact voter perceptions in key states.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre highlighted the importance of leadership during such crises, stating, "Unfortunately, there are going to be events like this, and this is where you see the leadership of a president show up." She emphasised that it matters who occupies the presidency. Harris, with President Joe Biden's support, is aiming to project calm amidst these challenges.
Impact on Voter Perception
The current president, Joe Biden, remains responsible for managing the US economy and foreign policy during this turbulent period. His actions could influence how voters view Harris and Trump. Biden's approach to these crises might affect undecided voters' opinions about Harris in the upcoming election.
Harris and Biden have been actively involved in managing the hurricane recovery efforts while also addressing the Middle East conflict. They coordinated with aides as the US supported Israel against an Iranian attack following Hezbollah leaders' deaths. Meanwhile, they monitored economic developments as dockworkers began striking from Maine to Texas.
Trump's Criticism and Campaign Dynamics
Trump criticised Harris, suggesting she was overwhelmed by these issues and claimed such problems wouldn't have occurred under his leadership. At a Wisconsin event, he remarked on global disrespect towards the US, linking it to recent attacks on Israel. However, Trump's previous handling of COVID-19-related challenges contributed to his electoral defeat four years ago.
Biden acknowledged public frustration with federal responses to the hurricane before meeting aides on Tuesday. He has been in contact with affected area leaders and stressed the need for swift recovery efforts. Biden planned visits to hurricane-hit regions in the Carolinas, Georgia, and Florida.
Campaign Strategies Amidst Crises
Harris also scheduled visits to Georgia and North Carolina to assess hurricane damage. During Tuesday's vice-presidential debate, both campaigns showcased their responses to recent developments. Minnesota Governor Tim Walz endorsed Harris's steady leadership, while Ohio Senator JD Vance advocated for Trump's return to restore peace through strength.
Biden has refrained from campaigning since announcing his reelection withdrawal in July due to declining approval ratings. His absence suggests Democrats view him as more of a liability than an asset in promoting Harris's candidacy.
Challenges and Opportunities for Harris
The convergence of multiple crises poses risks for Harris's campaign due to their unpredictable nature. A prolonged strike or mishandled disaster response could raise doubts about Biden's leadership and by extension, Harris's capabilities. However, campaign aides see this moment as an opportunity to demonstrate their seriousness about leadership responsibilities.
Historically, late-term challenges have influenced American presidential politics. Incumbents often attempt to showcase stability during uncertain times or create October surprises to benefit their party's nominee. Edward Frantz from the University of Indianapolis noted that persuading voters at this stage might be challenging.
The unfolding events will test both candidates' abilities to manage crises effectively. Their responses could shape voter opinions as they decide who should lead the nation amidst these complex challenges.
