Hardeep Singh Nijjar Murder Case: Canada SC Grants Bail To Four Indian Suspects

Canada Supreme Court Grants Bail To Four Indians Accused In Hardeep Singh Nijjar Murder Case

The four Indians, accused in the murder case of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar, has been granted bail by the Supreme Court in Canada, News18 reported.

The case will come up for hearing on February 11. This decision came after a lower court halted proceedings due to insufficient evidence.

Canadian police failed to present substantial evidence against the accused, CNN-News18 reported citing sources. The individuals, Karan Brar, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh, and Karanpreet Singh, were charged in November 2024 and later appealed for bail at the Canadian Supreme Court, which was approved.

Legal Proceedings and Evidence

Court documents reveal that three of the accused participated in the hearing via video conferencing, while one was represented by counsel. An official from the British Columbia Prosecution Service stated, "Some pre-trial motions will be held before the actual trial, but we cannot provide an estimate yet regarding the duration of the pre-trial period."

The strained relations between India and Canada worsened after Prime Minister Trudeau's allegations in September last year. He suggested a "potential" involvement of Indian agents in Nijjar's killing. New Delhi dismissed these claims as "absurd."

Background and Diplomatic Tensions

Najjar, designated terrorist by India, was shot dead outside a gurdwara in Surrey, British Columbia, on June 18 last year. India maintains that Canada's leniency towards pro-Khalistan elements operating freely from its soil is a significant issue between the two nations.

The ongoing diplomatic tension highlights deeper issues between India and Canada. The accusations have added strain to their bilateral relations, with both countries standing firm on their respective positions.
