Hamas Offers Ceasefire, Urges Trump To Pressure Israel For Peace In Gaza
Hamas, the Palestinian militant group, has expressed its readiness to consider a ceasefire with Israel in the Gaza Strip, provided that any proposed terms are upheld by Israel. Bassem Naim, a member of Hamas' political bureau, urged US President-elect Donald Trump to exert pressure on Israel to halt its ongoing military actions in the region.
Speaking to AFP from Doha, Qatar, Naim stated, "Hamas is ready to reach a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip if a proposal is presented and on the condition that the proposal is respected by Israel." He further called on the incoming US administration to take an active role in mediating peace.

Qatar Halts Mediation Efforts
This announcement follows Qatar's decision to suspend its mediation efforts until both parties display "willingness and seriousness" to end the hostilities. Qatar, which hosts members of Hamas' political bureau, clarified that it would only resume its role if tangible commitment is shown. Majed Al Ansari, spokesperson for Qatar's foreign ministry, emphasized that progress could only be achieved through genuine efforts from both sides.
The Toll of War
The ongoing Gaza conflict, which began on October 7, 2023, after a coordinated attack by Hamas, has led to immense loss of life and widespread devastation. The initial attacks by Hamas resulted in 1,206 deaths in Israel, predominantly civilians, and the abduction of 251 hostages. According to Israeli authorities, 34 of these hostages have died, while 97 remain in captivity.
Israel's retaliatory strikes in Hamas-controlled Gaza have led to 43,764 deaths, primarily civilians, as reported by local authorities. The destruction has left countless families displaced and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis in the region.
A Call for International Intervention
Hamas' call for US involvement underscores the group's aim to shift the dynamics of international mediation. With Donald Trump poised to take office, expectations for the US role in addressing the escalating crisis have risen. Whether the incoming administration can navigate the complex political landscape remains to be seen.
The Gaza conflict continues to draw global concern, with calls for an end to violence growing louder from humanitarian organizations and political leaders worldwide. For now, the prospect of a ceasefire rests on the ability of all parties involved to prioritize peace over conflict.
