Hamas Leader Muhammad Sinwar Killed In Israel's Air Strike

As per Saudi media reports, Muhammad Sinwar, a key Hamas leader in Gaza has been killed. Reports said, his body was discovered in a tunnel near Khan Younis, following an Israeli airstrike targeting an underground Hamas base. The strike occurred near the European Hospital, aiming at Sinwar, who was the de facto commander of Hamas's military wing in Gaza.

The airstrike also resulted in the deaths of 10 of Sinwar's aides. Al-Hadath reported, "after the mystery surrounding his fate, Al Arabiya/Al Hadath sources confirmed that the body of Muhammad Sinwar and 10 of his aides was found inside a tunnel in Khan Yunis, in the southern Gaza Strip."

Leadership Vacuum in Gaza

Sinwar's death may lead to a leadership gap for Hamas within Gaza. Many senior leaders reside outside the region. Mohammad Shabana, who might have succeeded him, also died in the same airstrike. Consequently, Izz ad-Din Haddad from Hamas's Gaza City Brigade could potentially take over leadership.

The attack on Tuesday afternoon targeted Sinwar specifically. Health authorities under Hamas initially reported 16 fatalities but did not confirm Sinwar's death until now. The confirmation by Saudi media ends speculation about his fate.

Background on Muhammad Sinwar

Muhammad Sinwar rose to prominence after previous leaders were killed. He became head of Hamas's military wing after Muhammad Deif's death last year. Following Yahya Sinwar's killing by Israeli forces in October 2024, he assumed leadership of the group in Gaza.

Sinwar was known as the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, a former Hamas leader who also met his end at the hands of Israeli forces. His leadership role began after these significant losses within the group.
