Three days of mourning for Haniyeh have been declared by Iran, according to state media reports. A funeral for Haniyeh will be held in Tehran on Thursday at 8 am local time. After which his body will be transferred to Qatar's capital, Doha, for prayers and burial.

The ceremony will take place in the national mosque of Qatar, the largest in the country. Haniyeh will be buried in Lusail, north of Doha, in the same cemetery where the founder of the State of Qatar, Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, is interred, as reported by Times Of Israel. The political movement Fatah, led by Abbas, has opposed Hamas since the latter wrested control over the Gaza Strip in 2007 and killed and ousted hundreds of Fatah members.

How was Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh killed?

Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas's politburo, has been reported dead in Tehran, according to Iranian state media. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed his death, attributing it to an airstrike. Hamas, on the other hand, has accused Israel of orchestrating the attack on Haniyeh's residence, as per media reports.

The Associated Press has reported that Hamas blames an Israeli airstrike for Haniyeh's death, though an Israeli military spokesperson has not yet commented on the allegations. The attack occurred shortly after Haniyeh attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iran's new President, Masoud Pezeshkian, alongside other prominent figures from Hamas and Hezbollah.

Initial reports indicated that an Iranian source informed the pro-Hezbollah news site al Mayadeen that a missile launched from outside Iran was used in the attack, as reported by AP. However, Iranian media later confirmed that Haniyeh was killed by an air-launched missile while staying in a residence designated for war veterans in northern Tehran.

The IRGC initially stated that it was still investigating the circumstances of the attack but has since confirmed the nature of the missile strike. Analysts on Iranian state television have quickly attributed the attack to Israel, though no official claim of responsibility has been made.

In response to the killing, Iran convened an emergency meeting of its Supreme National Security Council at the residence of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The meeting, described as occurring only under extraordinary circumstances, included Esmail Ghaani, the commander of Iran's Quds Force, as per Anadolu Agency report.

According to Iranian state TV, Haniyeh's death is expected to delay a Gaza ceasefire-hostage deal by several months and provoke retaliation from Iran-backed groups across the region. The statements reflect the broader sentiments of Khamenei and the Iranian government regarding the incident.
