Hamas Condemns ICC Warrants For Its Leaders And Israeli Officials | Here's What We Know

The decision by the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to seek the arrests of Hamas leaders was denounced by the Hamas terror group on Monday, with complaints being made about the announcement being made simultaneously with a similar move against Israel's prime minister and defence minister.

In a statement issued Monday, it was expressed by Hamas that the attempts of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to equate the victim with the executioner by issuing arrest warrants against several Palestinian resistance leaders were strongly denounced, as reported by Times Of Israel (TOI).

Hamas Condemns ICC Warrants

These warrants are related to the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, which began following a devastating attack on Israel led by the Palestinian terror group on October 7. It was demanded by Hamas in their statement that all arrest warrants issued against leaders of the Palestinian resistance be canceled, citing violations of UN conventions and resolutions, as per TOI reports.

Hamas further asserted that it has the right to resist Israeli occupation, including through "armed resistance," and criticized the court for seeking the arrests of only two Israeli leaders. International Criminal Court Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan earlier announced that arrest warrants had been requested from the court's judges for Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas ruler in Gaza; Mohammed Deif, the terror group's military chief; and Ismail Haniyeh, the leader of the organization. Charges including extermination, murder, hostage-taking, rape, and sexual assault were mentioned.

The prosecutor's decision was criticized by Senior Hamas official Sami Abu Zuhri, who stated that it equates the victim with the executioner and encourages Israel to continue its war of extermination in Gaza. It is believed that both Sinwar and Deif are hiding in Gaza, where efforts by Israel to hunt them down are ongoing.

However, Haniyeh, the supreme leader of the Islamic terror group, is based in Qatar and frequently travels across the region, as reported by local media. A statement was made by Wasel Abu Youssef, a member of the Palestine Liberation Organization's executive committee, asserting that the Palestinian people have the right to defend themselves, and the ICC is required to issue arrest warrants against Israeli officials who are pursuing crimes of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

Prosecutor Khan also indicated that warrants were being sought against Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for crimes including causing extermination, causing starvation as a method of war including the denial of humanitarian relief supplies, and deliberately targeting civilians in conflict. The move was denounced by Israeli officials, who also criticized the ICC for lumping Israel and Hamas together, as per media reports.

Despite Israel not being a member of the court, and even if the arrest warrants are issued, Netanyahu and Gallant do not face any immediate risk of prosecution. However, Khan's announcement has deepened Israel's isolation as it continues with its war, and the threat of arrest could complicate international travel for the Israeli leaders.

Israel has stated that its offensive in Gaza is aimed at eliminating Hamas, and the high civilian toll is attributed to the terror group's use of civilians as human shields. During the October 7 onslaught by Hamas on southern Israel, approximately 1,200 people were killed, and 252 were kidnapped by terrorists.

The Gaza Health Ministry, controlled by Hamas, has reported that more than 35,000 people in the Strip have been killed or are presumed dead in the ongoing fighting, though only around 24,000 fatalities have been identified at hospitals.

These tools, which cannot be verified, include about 15,000 terror operatives that Israel claims to have killed in battle. Additionally, Israel has stated that around 1,000 terrorists were killed inside Israel on October 7, as reported.

In the ground offensive against Hamas and operations along the Gaza border, 283 Israeli soldiers have been killed, along with a civilian Defense Ministry contractor in the Strip.
