HAL And UAC Formalise MoU To Produce SJ-100 Aircraft For India's Aviation Sector

HAL and Russia's UAC have signed a MoU to manufacture the SJ-100 aircraft in India, boosting regional aviation connectivity and supporting the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative.

The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Russia's United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to produce the SJ-100 civil commuter aircraft. This agreement was formalised in Moscow on October 27, 2025, with Prabhat Ranjan representing HAL and Oleg Bogomolov representing UAC.

Significance for Indian Aviation

The SJ-100 is a twin-engine, narrow-body aircraft. Over 200 units are already in operation with more than 16 commercial airlines. HAL believes this aircraft will revolutionise short-haul connectivity under India's UDAN Scheme. The agreement grants HAL the rights to manufacture these aircraft for domestic use.

Production Milestone

This collaboration marks a significant milestone as it will be the first time a complete passenger aircraft is produced in India since HAL's AVRO HS-748 project, which ran from 1961 to 1988. The partnership is built on mutual trust between HAL and UAC, aiming to boost regional connectivity.

Future Demand and Impact

HAL anticipates that India's aviation sector will need over 200 jets like the SJ-100 in the next decade for regional routes. Additionally, around 350 more aircraft will be required for international destinations in the Indian Ocean region. This initiative aligns with India's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision in civil aviation.

Manufacturing the SJ-100 domestically will not only enhance self-reliance but also bolster the private sector. It is expected to generate numerous direct and indirect employment opportunities within the aviation industry, contributing significantly to economic growth.
